According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a M5.1 earthquake occurred at 8:07AM EDT near Sparta, North Carolina on August 9, 2020. Within two hours, more than 50,000 people across eight states reported feeling the earthquake using the USGS Did You Feel it? program. Occurring in the East Tennessee/Southern Appalachian Seismic Zone, the earthquake was the largest to happen in North Carolina in more than 100 years.
