In partnership with the Commonwealth of Virginia, Maryland, the District of Columbia, the Federal Emergency Emergency Management Agency, National Park Service, and US Geological Survey, CUSEC is pleased have a leadership role in a press conference scheduled for August 23, 2012 in Washington, D.C. The press conference will mark the one year anniversary of the earthquake that shook much of the east coast, and is reported to have been felt by nearly one third of the U.S. population. The quake also caused at least $75 million dollars in damages in Virginia, and millions more in the surrounding states.
The press conference will also kick off the National Preparedness Month and Great SouthEast ShakeOut initiatives, which are designed to engage millions of people in disaster and earthquake preparedness activities. Speaking at the press conference, will be senior government leadership officials, including the Supt. of the National Mall, Director of the US Geological Survey, Deputy and Associate Administrators of FEMA, and state government officials from Maryland and the District of Columbia. Topics will include ongoing challenges related to the recovery following the earthquake, current knowledge of the earthquake threat, and public preparedness programs designed to protect lives and save property. CUSEC Executive Director Jim Wilkinson will facilitate the press conference.
