Non-Structural Mitigation Workshop - Memphis, TN - 04/23/2009 Print E-mail

On April 18, 2008, a magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck near Mt. Carmel, Illinois.  This earthquake was felt in 16 states by over 40,000 people, according to the USGS.  Since January of 2008, there have been nearly 300 earthquakes in the central United States, some of which were also felt over a large area of the region.  When and where the next one will occur, and how large it will be, are questions which are difficult, if not impossible, to answer with any certainty, but reducing the vulnerability from damages is possible.

Workshop Information
Even during smaller sized earthquakes, non-structural components of buildings and structures can cause injury and/or varying amounts of damage.  Components such as HVAC, mechanical and electrical, shelving, filing systems, parapets, computer systems, and more, are all susceptible to damage if not properly secured.  By using sound, cost effective mitigation techniques, these losses can be reduced, and in some cases eliminated.

The Central U.S. Earthquake Consortium and its sponsoring partners are pleased to invite you to a one day workshop on the basic principles of non-structural mitigation for earthquakes.  The workshop will include topics and speakers on:

Earthquake Hazard Overview

Earthquake Program Overview

Structural Basics

Non-Structural Elements & Hazards

Non-Structural Mitigation Projects

This training is being jointly sponsored by the following organizations:   The Central U.S. Earthquake Consortium, the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Motorola Foundation, and Memphis Light, Gas, and Water.
