On April 18, 2008, a magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck near Mt. Carmel, Illinois.  This earthquake was felt in at least 16 states by over 40,000 people, according to the USGS.  Since January of 2008, there have been more than 300 earthquakes in the central United States. Some of these were felt over a large area of the region. When and where the next one will occur and how large it will be, are difficult, if not impossible, questions to answer with any certainty; however, reducing the vulnerability to damages is possible.
